Alocasia wentii (Elephant Ear)
Appearance of the plant
Large, heart-shaped leaves with a deep green upper side and a striking purple-bronze underside
Strong, upright petioles that gracefully carry the leaves
In pots usually 60–120 cm high, with a distinctly tropical appearance
Location
Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight
Tolerates some partial shade, but grows more compact in sufficient light
Avoid direct bright midday sun to prevent leaf burn
Water requirement
Keep the potting soil constantly slightly moist, but avoid the roots standing in water
Water more often in spring and summer; water a little more sparingly in winter
Likes high humidity, so occasional misting will help
Winter hardiness
Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant
Fun fact: The Alocasia wentii is popular with plant lovers because of its rare leaf color combination — the contrasting top and bottom make it a real eye-catcher in any interior.
