Beaucarnea recurvata – branched (Elephant's Foot)
Appearance of the plant
Strong, thickened trunk base (caudex) that stores water, with multiple branches at the top
Narrow, long leaves that hang down gracefully in full tufts
In pots usually 100–200 cm high, depending on age and pruning
Location
Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight
Also tolerates direct sunlight and can be placed outside in a sheltered spot in summer
Can also survive in a light spot in partial shade
Water requirement
Water very sparingly: allow the potting soil to dry completely between waterings.
Water a little more often in spring and summer, very sparingly in winter
Well-draining potting soil is essential to prevent root rot
Winter hardiness
Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant
Fun fact: Despite its name, the Beaucarnea recurvata isn't a true palm or tree, but a succulent. Its thick base acts as a natural water reservoir, allowing it to survive for weeks without water.
