Chamaerops humilis (European dwarf palm)
Appearance of the plant
Compact fan palm with fan-shaped, gray-green to silver-green leaves
Multiple trunks that originate close to the ground, creating a full, shrubby shape
In pots usually 80–150 cm tall; in open ground it can reach 2–4 metres
Location
Sunny spot for optimal growth
Also tolerates partial shade, but remains more compact and denser in full sun
Suitable for patio, balcony or open ground in sheltered gardens
Water requirement
Water moderately: allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Very drought resistant once well established
Winter hardiness
Hardy to approx. -10 °C, sometimes even to -12 °C in a sheltered spot
Protect young plants and potted specimens from severe frost
Good resistance to wind and sea air
Fun fact: The European dwarf palm is the only native palm species in Europe and grows naturally around the Mediterranean — so it's perfectly adapted to dry summers and mild, but sometimes cold, winters.
