Chamaerops humilis – multi-stem (European dwarf palm)
Appearance of the plant
Compact fan palm with multiple trunks growing upwards from the base
Fan-shaped leaves in gray-green to silver-green, sturdy and weather-resistant
In pots usually 80–150 cm tall; in open ground it can reach 2–4 metres in warm climates
Location
Sunny spot for optimal growth
Also tolerates partial shade, but remains more compact and fuller in full sun
Suitable for patio, balcony or open ground in sheltered gardens
Water requirement
Water moderately: allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Very drought resistant once established
Winter hardiness
Hardy to approx. -10 °C, sometimes even to -12 °C in a sheltered spot
Protect young plants and potted specimens from severe frost
Resistant to wind and sea air
Fun fact: The European dwarf palm is Europe's only native palm species and grows naturally in coastal areas around the Mediterranean — its multi-trunked shape gives it an extra full, natural look.
