Chamaerops humilis – on stem (European dwarf palm)
Appearance of the plant
Sturdy, single trunk with a crown of fan-shaped, gray-green leaves at the top
Trunk is covered with fibrous structures and can become thicker and rougher with age
In pots usually 100–180 cm tall; in open ground it can grow up to 3–4 metres in warm climates
Location
Sunny spot for optimal growth
Also tolerates partial shade, but develops a fuller crown in full sun
Suitable for patio, balcony or open ground in sheltered gardens
Water requirement
Water moderately: allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Very drought resistant once well established
Winter hardiness
Hardy to approx. -10 °C, sometimes to -12 °C in a sheltered spot
Protect young plants and potted specimens from severe frost
Resistant to wind and sea air
Fun fact: The Chamaerops humilis is the only native palm species in Europe and grows naturally along the Mediterranean coast, where it can withstand dry summers and mild, but sometimes cold, winters.
