Chamaerops humilis (European dwarf palm)
Appearance of the plant
Compact palm with fan-shaped, gray-green to dark green leaves
Multiple trunks that together form a full, shrubby shape
In pots usually 80–150 cm tall, but can grow up to 2–3 metres in open ground
Location
Sunny to partially shaded spot
Ideal for outside in the garden, on the terrace or balcony
Indoors only in a very bright location with plenty of direct sunlight
Water requirement
Moderate watering: allow the top layer of soil to dry before watering again
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Well-drained soil is important to prevent root rot
Winter hardiness
Good winter hardiness: tolerates down to approx. -10°C, with protection against cold winds and wet frost.
In severe winters or prolonged frost, provide extra protection with fleece.
More sensitive to cold in a pot than in open ground
Fun fact: The European dwarf palm is the only native palm species in Europe and grows naturally in Mediterranean areas such as Spain, Italy and southern France.
