Clusia rosea (Signature Plant)
Appearance of the plant
Oval, thick, leathery leaves in glossy dark green
Compact, bushy growth that is also used as a hedge plant outdoors in tropical areas
In pots usually 50–150 cm high; slow growing but very sturdy in structure
Location
Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight
Also tolerates partial shade, but grows faster in sufficient light
Can be placed outside in summer in a sheltered spot, but not in full midday sun.
Water requirement
Water moderately: allow the top layer of potting soil to dry before watering again
Water regularly in spring and summer; water sparingly in winter
Better to tolerate too little than too much water
Winter hardiness
Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant in our climate
Fun fact: The Clusia rosea is also known as a “signature plant” because children (and adults) used to carve names or messages into its thick leaves — the leaf would grow back, leaving the carved message visible.
