Appearance of the plant:
The Dracaena is an elegant, easily recognizable houseplant with a tropical appearance. Depending on the species, it has narrow to broader, sword-shaped leaves in green, yellow, red, or a mix of colors. Many varieties, such as the Dracaena marginata, have a slender stem with a crown of leaves at the top, creating a palm-like silhouette. Other varieties, such as the Dracaena fragrans (also known as the "corn plant"), have fuller leaves. Indoors, dracaenas can easily grow to 150–200 cm or taller, depending on pot size and care.
This plant is very good for air purification in the home!
Location:
Dracaenas are easy to care for and can be placed in either a bright or partially shaded spot. They prefer bright, indirect light but can also tolerate lower light, making them ideal for living rooms, offices, and hallways. Direct sunlight can cause leaf scorch in sensitive varieties. The more variegated or light-colored the plant, the more light it generally needs to remain beautiful.
Water requirement:
Dracaenas need moderate to low watering. Let the top layer of potting soil dry out before watering again. Too much water or wet feet are among the few things dracaenas can't tolerate – they quickly lead to root rot. In winter, the plant needs less water. Brown leaf tips often indicate dry air or too much lime in the water; rainwater or filtered water is ideal.
Winter hardiness:
The Dracaena is a true houseplant and not winter-hardy . It prefers temperatures between 15 and 25°C and must be protected from cold drafts and temperatures below 10°C. Avoid placing it near cold windows or in unheated rooms during the winter. In warm climates (frost-free), it can also be placed outdoors, but in our region, it is best kept indoors.
