Narrow, pointed leaves with a dark green core and fine reddish-purple leaf margins

Slender, upright stems with compact crowns of leaves

Usually 120–200 cm tall in pots, but can grow even taller indoors

Location

Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight

Also tolerates partial shade, but retains more intense leaf colours in sufficient light

Avoid prolonged bright midday sun to prevent leaf burn

Water requirement

Water moderately: allow the top layer of potting soil to dry before watering again

Water regularly in spring and summer, more sparingly in winter

Tolerates too little rather than too much water

Winter hardiness

Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant
