Dypsis lutescens (Gold palm / Areca palm)
Appearance of the plant
Graceful, feathery leaves in a fresh green color
Several thin stems that together form a full, airy bunch
In pots usually 120–200 cm tall, but can grow up to 6 metres in the wild
Location
Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight
Also tolerates partial shade, but grows less quickly there
Avoid prolonged exposure to bright midday sun
Water requirement
Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but allow the top layer to dry briefly before watering again
Water regularly in summer; water a little more sparingly in winter
Likes higher humidity, occasional misting helps prevent brown leaf tips
Winter hardiness
Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant
Fun fact: The Dypsis lutescens ranks high in NASA's Clean Air Study as an air purifier, helping to filter formaldehyde and benzene, among other things, from the air.
