Opuntia ficus-indica (Prickly Pear Cactus)
Appearance of the plant
Flat, oval discs ("pads") that function as thickened stems
Often provided with small spines or hairs (glochids)
In the right climate it can flower profusely with yellow or orange flowers, followed by edible fruits ("prickly pears")
Location
Very sunny spot; tolerates full sun very well
Suitable for outdoors in warm, dry climates or as a container plant in summer
Inside on a south or west-facing windowsill
Water requirement
Very little water needed: allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings
Water occasionally in spring and summer; keep almost dry in winter
Well-drained cactus soil is essential
Winter hardiness
Depending on the species: some Opuntias can tolerate frost down to about -20°C, but ficus indica can usually tolerate light frost down to -5°C. In case of prolonged frost, it's best to protect them or overwinter indoors.
Fun fact: The fruits of the prickly pear cactus are edible and rich in vitamin C, but must be peeled carefully because of the small spines on the skin.
