Pachira aquatica (Money Tree)

Appearance of the plant

Hand-shaped, glossy green leaves that grow on long stems

Often grown with a decorative braided trunk

In pots usually 100–150 cm tall, but can grow up to about 2 metres indoors

Location

Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight

Also tolerates partial shade, but grows faster in sufficient light

Avoid prolonged bright midday sun to prevent leaf burn

Water requirement

Water as soon as the top layer of potting soil has dried out slightly.

Water regularly in spring and summer; water sparingly in winter

Provide good drainage to prevent root rot

Winter hardiness

Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant

Fun fact: The Pachira aquatica is known in feng shui as a symbol of luck and prosperity, and is therefore often given as a “money tree”.
