Phoenix canariensis (Canary Island date palm)
Appearance of the plant
Large, feathery leaves in fresh green that hang gracefully over
Strong, thick trunk with a robust, tropical character
In a pot it usually grows to a height of 150–250 cm; in the open ground it can grow to 10–15 metres.
Location
Sunny, warm spot for optimal growth
Ideal for garden, terrace or balcony
Indoors only in a very bright location with plenty of direct sunlight
Water requirement
Moderate watering: allow the top layer of soil to dry before watering again
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Tolerates short periods of drought, but grows better with regular watering in summer
Winter hardiness
Fairly hardy: tolerates temperatures down to approx. -6°C to -8°C
Protect young specimens and potted plants from severe frost
In colder areas, overwinter in a greenhouse or sheltered house
Fun fact: The Canary Island date palm is an icon of the Canary Islands, found in many squares and promenades there — in warm climates it can produce small, edible dates.
