Phoenix roebelenii – Dwarf date palm
Appearance of the plant
Slender trunk with a graceful crown of finely feathered, softly overhanging leaves
Dark green, feather-shaped foliage that creates a luxurious tropical atmosphere
Slow growing; usually 120–200 cm tall in pots, up to about 3 m in ideal conditions
Location
Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight or partial shade
Can be placed outside in a sheltered spot in summer
Protect indoors from dry air and draughts
Water requirement
Keep the potting soil slightly moist, but avoid wet roots
Water regularly in spring and summer, more sparingly in winter
Likes slightly higher humidity – occasional spraying helps
Winter hardiness
Not completely winter hardy: can tolerate short periods of light frost (approx. –2 °C)
In temperate climates, overwinter as a container plant in a light, cool place (min. 5–10 °C)
Fun fact: In its native Southeast Asian habitat, the Phoenix roebelenii produces small edible dates, but in our country it is prized for its elegant, tender leaves, which are safe for children and pets because the spines are minimal.
