Schefflera arboricola (Fingerplant / Umbrella Plant)
Appearance of the plant
Glossy, palmate leaves that fan out like the spokes of an umbrella
Compact shrub form or grown on a trunk
In pots usually 80–150 cm high, depending on variety and pruning
Location
Bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight
Also tolerates partial shade, but grows more compact in sufficient light
Avoid prolonged direct bright midday sun on the leaves
Water requirement
Water moderately: allow the top layer of potting soil to dry out slightly.
Water more often in spring and summer; water more sparingly in winter
Better to tolerate too little than too much water
Winter hardiness
Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant
Fun fact: The Schefflera is often called the “umbrella plant” because of its characteristic leaf arrangement and is known for its air-purifying properties.
