Appearance of the plant

Large, banana-leaf-like leaves on sturdy, upright stems

Forms large, white flowers with a blue accent in sufficient light and space.

Usually 150–250 cm tall in pots, but can grow even taller indoors

Location

Very bright spot, preferably with several hours of direct sunlight

Does not tolerate dark locations — plenty of light is essential for growth and flowering

Ideal for a sunny living room, conservatory or office space

Water requirement

Water as soon as the top layer of potting soil has dried out slightly.

Water regularly in spring and summer; water sparingly in winter

Likes higher humidity, occasional misting helps

Winter hardiness

Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant or container plant

Minimum temperature: approx. 10–12°C

It can be kept outside in the summer, but must be brought back inside before the first frost.

Fun fact: Strelitzia augusta is closely related to Strelitzia nicolai and can grow up to 10 meters tall in the wild — which is why it is sometimes called the "giant among bird-of-paradise flowers."
