Strelitzia nicolai (White Bird of Paradise Flower)

Appearance of the plant

Large, banana-leaf-like leaves on sturdy, upright stems

Can produce impressive white flowers with a blue accent when cared for properly

In a pot it usually grows to a height of 150–250 cm, but indoors it can grow even taller.

Location

Very bright spot, preferably with several hours of direct sunlight

Does not tolerate dark locations — plenty of light is essential for growth and flowering

Ideal for a sunny living room or conservatory

Water requirement

Water as soon as the top layer of potting soil has dried out slightly.

Water regularly in spring and summer; water a little more sparingly in winter

Likes higher humidity, occasional misting helps

Winter hardiness

Not winter hardy, only suitable as a houseplant or container plant

It can be kept outside in the summer, but it should be brought back inside before the first frost.

Fun fact: In its natural habitat in South Africa, Strelitzia nicolai can grow up to 10 meters tall and is sometimes planted as a natural windbreak.
