Appearance of the plant:
The Trachycarpus fortunei , also known as the Chinese fan palm or hemp palm, is a palm tree with a slender, fibrous trunk and large, fan-shaped leaves. The trunk is covered with a characteristic, rough bark of brown fibers. The leaves are bright green and can reach a diameter of up to 1 meter, creating a distinctly tropical appearance. In the ground or a large pot, this palm can reach a height of 3 to 5 meters over time, depending on its age and location.
Location:
This palm prefers a sunny to partially shaded spot . In the garden, it's best planted in a sheltered location, for example, out of the northeast wind, to minimize leaf damage. It thrives in borders, patios, and as a standalone plant in a pot. It's also popular as a patio plant, as long as it gets enough light. Indoors, it's less suitable due to its need for fresh air and sun.
Water requirement:
The Trachycarpus fortunei has average water needs. Water regularly during warm periods, especially if it's in a pot. The soil should remain slightly moist, but certainly not soggy. It needs less water in winter, especially when dormant or in a cool environment. Always ensure good drainage to prevent root rot.
Winter hardiness:
This palm is one of the most winter-hardy species in the world and can tolerate temperatures down to about -15°C to -18°C , provided it is well-rooted and planted in a sheltered spot. Young or potted plants can be temporarily protected with fleece or burlap during severe frost. Protecting the root zone with mulch or leaves also helps during prolonged cold weather. Potted plants are somewhat more sensitive to frost, so temporarily bringing them indoors or insulating them is recommended during extreme weather.
