Trachycarpus fortunei (Chinese fan palm)

Appearance of the plant

• Large, fan-shaped leaves on a slender, fibrous stem

• Tough, exotic look that immediately creates a Mediterranean atmosphere

• Can grow to 3–5 metres high in the ground, but remains more compact in a pot.

Location

• Likes a sunny to semi-shady spot

• In the garden, preferably sheltered from strong winds, so that the leaves remain beautiful.

• Suitable for terrace, balcony or open ground

• It can survive indoors, but often grows more slowly, loses leaf quality and can suffer from air that is too dry.

Water requirement

• Water regularly during the growing season, especially in pots

• In open ground, only water during prolonged drought

• Provide good drainage, as standing water can cause root rot

Winter hardiness

• Very winter hardy: tolerates temperatures down to approx. -15°C in open ground

• Protect young plants with fleece in case of severe frost

• In a pot it is slightly more sensitive to frost, so protect it or place it indoors.
