Trachycarpus fortunei (Chinese fan palm)
Appearance of the plant
Large, fan-shaped leaves in fresh green, borne on long, slender petioles
Rough, fibrous trunk that becomes more visible with age
In pots it usually grows to a height of 100–200 cm, in open ground it can reach 10–12 metres.
Location
Sunny to partially shaded spot
Ideal for garden, terrace or balcony
Indoors only in a very bright location with plenty of direct sunlight
Water requirement
Moderate watering: allow the top layer of soil to dry before watering again
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Provide good drainage to prevent root rot
Winter hardiness
Very winter hardy: tolerates temperatures down to approx. -15°C
In severe winters, protect young plants from wet snow and icy winds
More sensitive to cold in a pot, so provide extra protection in case of frost
Fun fact: The Trachycarpus fortunei is one of the hardiest palms in the world and is therefore often called the "Northern Palm" — ideal for adding an exotic touch to a temperate garden.
