Trachycarpus wagnerianus (Wagner palm)
Appearance of the plant
Compact fan palm with stiff, dark green leaves that are smaller and firmer than the common Trachycarpus fortunei
Slender, fibrous stem that becomes visible at a later age
In pots it usually grows to a height of 100–200 cm, in open ground it can reach 3–4 metres
Location
Sunny to partially shaded spot
Ideal for the garden, terrace or balcony
Indoors only in a very bright location with plenty of direct sunlight
Water requirement
Moderate watering: allow the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again
Water more often in a pot than in open ground
Provide good drainage to prevent root rot
Winter hardiness
Very winter hardy: tolerates temperatures down to approx. -15°C
In severe winters, protect young plants from wet snow and icy winds
More sensitive to cold in a pot, so provide extra protection in case of frost
Fun fact: The Trachycarpus wagnerianus is often called the “fancier” version of the Trachycarpus fortunei, because its compact, sturdy leaves are more resistant to wind and snow.
