Yucca elephantipes (Giant Yucca / Elephant Palm)
Appearance of the plant
Strong, woody trunk that is often thickened at the bottom (hence the name elephant palm )
Long, sword-shaped leaves in fresh green, without sharp points
In pots usually 100–250 cm tall; in warm climates it can grow even taller
Location
Very bright spot with lots of indirect sunlight
Also tolerates several hours of direct sunlight per day
Can be placed outside in a sunny, sheltered spot in summer
Water requirement
Water moderately: allow the top layer of potting soil to dry thoroughly between waterings.
Tolerates drought better than overwatering
Water sparingly in winter
Winter hardiness
Not completely winter hardy: tolerates temperatures down to approx. -3°C
In cold regions, overwinter indoors or protect from frost.
Can be kept indoors all year round as a houseplant
Fun fact: the Yucca elephantipes isn't a true palm, but a member of the asparagus family. It's very easy to care for and is often chosen as a statement plant for offices and living rooms.
