Yucca rostrata (palm lily)
Appearance of the plant
Graceful, blue-gray, narrow leaves that grow in a perfect spherical shape atop a single stem
Trunk can grow to 2–4 metres high over the years; in pots often 80–150 cm
Sleek, architectural look that fits well in modern and Mediterranean gardens
Location
Sunny, warm spot with well-drained soil
Ideal for the garden, terrace or balcony
Indoors only in a very bright location, preferably with direct sunlight.
Water requirement
Very little water needed: allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings
Water occasionally in summer, keep almost dry in winter
Tolerates prolonged drought very well
Winter hardiness
Very winter hardy: tolerates temperatures down to approx. -15°C, provided the soil drains well.
Protect against prolonged wet frost, especially in pots
Provide extra protection in wet winters to prevent root rot
Fun fact: Yucca rostrata is called “Beaked Yucca” in the deserts of Texas and Mexico because of its beak-shaped flower heads, and in the wild it can form spectacular flower spikes up to 1 meter long.
